I stood up, tense and wary, looking round carefully, but the sense of an invisible presence was overwhelming. I shrugged mentally and continued my musing, but the feeling returned more forcefully and I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stiffen and rise. Surprised and a little alarmed, I turned, but there was nothing. Suddenly, I had the distinct sensation that someone was standing close by me. It was a magical moment, so I stopped and sat down on a stump, the better to soak up the scene as the deer moved unconcerned up the hill. At the same time, on the far bank of the stream, a pair of roe deer, drinking at the water’s edge, moved into the stubble field. Then a cock pheasant called from the edge of the bracken and moved away towards the wood. I was walking slowly, taking in the quiet and beauty of the scene. On the far side of the stream was a field of stubble and on my side a wood fringed by bracken. As the sun began to climb, I found myself walking down a shallow valley with a good-sized stream flowing alongside the path. In Spain, the weather was excellent and I liked to be up and on my way by dawn, as it was so peaceful and I had the Way all to myself. I undertook the pilgrimage to Santiago in the autumn of 2003. SIR – Reading your obituary of John Brierley ( July 26), I recall a similar experience to his at the summit of O Cebreiro. Maybe my DNA would convince it.ĭoes HMRC think that a fraudster might be so desperate to pay my tax for me that this plethora of security checks is necessary? Do I wait for a further communication, possibly telling me that I am being fined for non-payment? To say that our Civil Service needs an overhaul is a monumental understatement. HMRC has my national insurance number, my personal details, my bank account number and passport details, yet to verify that I am who I say I am, it wants the date I opened my telephone account. I spent an hour online trying to satisfy its security requirements, and failing because I no longer hold a driving licence. One informed me that the amount owing would be taken from my state pension in increments, while the other said I am to pay the whole amount before the end of the year. Though the calculations were identical, they arrived at a £10 difference in the amount I owe. SIR – On Wednesday I received two communications from HMRC about my tax code and liability for the coming year. Unfortunately, it is a Conservative Government that is leading the censorship charge. The wrong opinions on Brexit, lockdowns, Covid origins, Covid jab mandates, global warming and immigration can also result in your getting banned, cancelled, socially excluded, or even losing your job. But punishment isn’t limited to debanking. Recently made infamous by Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, who deployed it as a political weapon against demonstrating truckers, debanking appears to be increasingly used against anyone, or any institution, which does not toe the politically correct line. SIR – The debanking of Nigel Farage for wrongthink is the tip of an iceberg. Would it be asking too much of our present Conservative Government to look into Danish banking law as a matter of extreme urgency? As she explained, such chicanery would be impossible in Denmark, where customers are rigorously protected by banking laws and practice. She works for a Danish bank, and could scarcely credit the extent to which successive British governments have deliberately failed to protect banks’ clients. With us was my Danish cousin, who was astounded by the arrogance and lack of professional integrity of Coutts and other banks in this country. SIR – On Wednesday night, my wife and I watched our daughter, Alexandra, on television describing her unprofessional and politically motivated maltreatment by British banks. Where is the justification in paying such huge sums to directors of banks when our Prime Minister, in comparison, is paid a pittance? This is a company which, but for government intervention, would have collapsed because of gross mismanagement. SIR – I find it incomprehensible that a CEO of a bank that is 39 per cent owned by taxpayers was paid more than £5 million per annum. SIR – Can we assume that the behaviour of Dame Alison Rose does not meet the values of Coutts, and that therefore she will be debanked? SIR – I am inclined to open a Facebook account so that the banks can monitor what I really think about them. SIR – I have closed my two accounts with NatWest before it closes them, as my political views are on the same page as Nigel Farage’s.
